I Love Her
(from a distance)

I'm in love, but I can't do anything about it.
I'm in love, oh yeah, there's no doubt about it.
But when she looks at me there's not the same sparkle in her eyes,
That I see when she looks at the other guys.
I love her from a distance,
each and every day.
I love her from a distance,
cause I'm afraid of what she'll say.

She seems blind to me, whenever I'm around her.
She seems blind, but I'm not sure I want her to see me.
Cause if she did, all of my feelings would be bared,
And I'd rather think that she didn't know, than to think she didn't care.
I love her from a distance,
each and every day.
I love her from a distance,
cause I'm afraid of what she'll say.

Girl, how can you ignore me?
Tell me you don't feel my eyes.
Can't you see the desire?
Can't you feel the fire?
Baby, please say that you can.

But I guess I'll just have to keep my passion locked inside.
And spend more lonely nights, trying to soothe my pride.
I love her from a distance,
each and every day.
I love her from a distance,
cause I'm afraid of what she'll say.
Cause I'm afraid of what she'll say.

The Story:
Well, the title came from Russ Randall.
Actually, many of my titles came from him.
There was a period of time where I took 45% of the words that Russ said and turned them into song titles...

The arrangement came out of indecision.
For a while, we played the song as a ballad and liked it.
Then we played it
up tempo and we liked that, as well.
We couldn't decide which way to go with it.
Finally, someone (probably Russ again) said, "Let's do it half slow and half fast (not to be confused with half-assed)".

Actually, the exact words were probably closer to, "Fuck it. Let's do both."
So we did.

The Recording:
This recording of "I Love Her (from a distance)
" was done in 1990, in my bedroom studio (San Jose, California) as part of the "No Easy Answers" sessions.

The Lineup:
Glenn Hughes -
vocals, guitars, keyboards,
bass and drum programming

Final Word:
I still really like the lines,

"She seems blind, but I'm not sure I want her to see me.
Cause if she did, all of my feelings would be bared,
And I'd rather think that she didn't know, than to think she didn't care."

Then again, I've always been self-delusional...
