Speaking of faces, this is a common face that surprises many people. The mask is not to protect this woman from smog.
It's not to protect her from colds.
And it's certainly not a fashion statement.When Japanese people have a cold or flu, they will wear a mask to protect other people!
It's a startlingly civilized gesture that most foreigners misinterpret.
